Diabetic eye screening

Perry Optometrists is a registered Optometrist Practice with the Dorset Diabetic Eye Screening programme.

What is diabetic eye screening

If you are aged 11 or over and have diabetes, you should get your eyes checked annually by a qualified optometrist.

The screening is a very simple and painless procedure. The optician uses a special camera to take digital photographs of the back of your eyes. Before this happens you will need to dilate your pupils as the flash is quite bright.

Why have it done?

One of the most common causes of blindness in the working-age population is untreated diabetic retinopathy. Laser treatment is usually very effective at reducing loss of sight caused by this condition, but the danger can be that this condition is often asymptomatic until it reaches an advanced stage, when laser treatment is much less effective.

If you are a registered diabetic in Dorset, this eye screening is provided by accredited optometrists in practices across the county. We are one of the registered optometrists in the Dorset Eye Screening programme and cover Poole and Ferndown.
